Hi, I’m Matt I’ve been playing poker profesionally for over 10yrs now, but all NLHE, mostly as a midstakes live cash player, with a bit of 100 & 200NL thrown in as well. I’ve played a bunch of PLO over the years, but mostly just as a break from NLHE or for fun, I’ve never studied PLO seriously but have now decided to make the transition to PLO full time.

The main reason for the transition is I find myself enjoying PLO more than holdem, and live especially it tends to be the PLO tables where people are laughing, talking and having fun, and the NLHE tables where people are just on their phones or have their headphones in. I also think generally the poker ecosysystem that PLO seems to be in a far healthier state than NLHE.

    Vision Statement

I’m a mid to high stakes live PLO player, playing cashgames at major series and festivals and playing online the rest of the time.

    Purpose Statement

I play poker because I love competition, autonomy and freedom. I work hard to improve my game because doing so allows me to lead the life I want to lead.

    Milestones

Spend 15hrs per week studying PLO.

Stick to Diet & Exercise Plan

Get over 7.5hrs sleep average, keeping my sleep schedule as consistent as possible.

Beat 50PLO for over 8BB/100 over a 50k hand sample, but only playing with studying and improvement in mind, and not mindlessly grinding.

    Hey Matt,

Welcome to the community and the PLO Mastermind great to have you on board!

Definitely agree with you regarding the poker ecosystem if you sit and compare PLO and NLH they seem to be on complete different paths for the majority, now more than ever seems to be a good time to dive deep into PLO!

Good luck with your milestones especially the 7.5hrs of average sleep, as someone that has an up and down sleep schedule where I pretty much sleep in 3-4 intervals I know how tough this one is, would love to hear more on what you’re doing to try and get into the routine.

Look forward to reading future updates.

    Thanks for the welcome Ash,

With regards to the processes I have put in place for the 7.5hrs average sleep, the main ones have been:

1 – Try to maintain a consistent bed & get up time (not always easy when playing poker)

2 – Turn off all screens 1hr before bedtime, then do journal/daily planner & then read something relaxing like fiction before bed.

    3 – No caffine 9hrs before bed

4 – No food or drink 3hrs before bed

    5 – Daily Exercise

I track my sleep pattern on a fitbit, and after 3 weeks I’m starting to see better results, my average sleep has been improving week by week and this week I am currently at 7hrs 23mins, this is compared to 6-6.5hrs I was regularly averaging per week before I started putting in any processes.

On the poker front, I haven’t played any PLO since starting this blog. I have been reading the JNandez book and have been focusing on trying to get my preflop strategy down and into memory so that I can recall my ranges and adjustments when playing. I think I’m close to getting there with that, so hope to play some PLO over the weekend focusing on my preflop play.
