Making Less Mistakes

As I only have 2 posts on the previous blog, I’ll paste them here to start this one. (didn’t work as planned, lots of edits but now is fine enough)

    Hello,
My name is Jonathan, I’m playing PLO50 and PLO100 right now.
Joined here and working on my way up the stakes.
I’ve dabbled with PLO in the past, but have been mostly an NLHE player.
I decided to really move to PLO and so am doing the 10 weeks transformation and crushing small stakes course to start.
First thing I need to fix is my preflop ranges so I’m working on that right now, with help from the bucket tool.

    <div>lol</div>

<div><div data-image-index=”0″>So that’s my first week, result could be more fun, but I’m happy with two points:
    </div></div>

    • I’ve seen major redline change during the week as I go through the course and select my betting/checking hands better, so it’s getting close to BE now.
    • I take down lots of pots, show aggression when needed, thanks to pop. tendencies charts, I steal the easy money. (W$WSF rating often >1.1)
      Plan is:
*I will up my study/play ratio next week and see how it goes.
*After I feel confident with my preflop game, and don’t have to think about it so much, I’ll dig into postflop.
Will try to take notes of the leaks I find and post them here as I go through.

Thanks reading so far, and GL at the tables!

First original post on this forum, and third week,

The grind started by a failed shot and a few BI lost, but I grinded it back and took another shot today, that went well, the tables were quite soft, am happy with my game, I play focus, no distraction, take mostly good decisions, still a lot of work to do tho’.

For the learning, I need to get more disciplined, I’ll have to work on my schedule, I listened to a podcast talking about being more professional, that’s clearly what I lack for the non grind part of the game. I’ve been taking it easy in the past and could be way better than I am now.

So I’ll work on designing an uninterrupted (important, being in front of computer kind of working is a waste of time) study routine.

Strategy wise, still lots of preflop work to do, I mark many hands as I play when I’m unsure about a decision, my mistakes are mostly marginal so that’s good.

    Hey guys,
Added more study to the study/grind this week, but spent almost the same number of hours grinding anyway, haha.
34h of grind last week, 33h this week.
I did study more though, about 2h a day.
Spent all wednesday watching a few videos, playing with the bucket tool and setting up a nice HUD for HM2.
I didn’t move down stakes as advised, I’ll move down if it goes bad, but the grind went well:

    <div>lol</div><div>

<div>That’s 7.45bb/100 and an EV at 12.9bb/100, pre rakeback, so I’m happy with it.
    </div></div>

    Quick recap of the week:

    • My preflop game is getting better and better, playing tighter leads to great results, getting constantly into easier postflop spots.
    • I used to play with only 6 basics stats, the 10Week HUD is really helping in many decision, I used a color coding system on it, using the recommended stats from the video, and changing color if villain CBet too often, or not enough and so on, having it for close decisions is amazing.

    And for next week:

    • Learning how to use the bucket tool for postflop, I want to train on playing AA IP/OOP in 3B pots, I too often end up unsure about the decision to CBet or not.
    • More bucket tool playing and if I happen to lower the number of hours I put in poker for some reason, I’ll cut on the grind.

That’s it for this week, thanks for reading and replying, I’ll check for replies as I didn’t last week (wasn’t expecting much :stuck_out_tongue: ).

looks good. you should try to play even tighter than suggested as you might lose money with those marginal +ev hands. rake is high, variance is also high with these marginal spots so might as well just avoid them

Looks like the shot has gone well for you so far keep it up, what stake is it you’re taking a shot at?

Glad to hear also you can see your preflop game constantly improving!

Keep up the good work and hope the shot continues to go well and you can make it your full time stake.

Shots are 200PLO, playing cautious (even if up, if I lose like 5 BI I’ll move back down, and grind it back as long as I don’t have the roll), some tables are really soft so it was quite tempting.

<div>Fourth week comes to an end,</div>

Forgive me, reader, for I have sinned.

I played about 20hours of some stupid video game this week, cost me lots of time, and is not the best way to relax when you already work on computer, won’t give you the name, I don’t want to trigger anyone reading this into playing it! 😀

Following this, I’ll start journaling daily, I had it in mind after reading Atomic Habits (highly recommend), watching a Tim Ferris video on the subject, and now it’s mentionned in the 10 week transformation, must be a sign.

I’ll buy an Agenda and use it to do the journaling/tracking, so I have a better vision of my organisation and habits, what and where to improve, what to cut, I’ve always some notebooks where I take notes of what I learn, or of some ideas, using it to declutter my mind and focus also, but never did journaling, time is now.

(I had more text but after I post I lost it, I don’t like this forum much, it’s 1am so I’ll just get to the point.)

    Plan for next week:

    • Getting and agenda, journaling/tracking what I do.
    • More volume, less tables (makes sense no?) ^^
    • Having a clear objective before session, stop if I lose focus and can’t get back in.
    • Continue preflop work mostly, even if week 5 is going to be postflop videos.

    Thanks for reading!

Good luck for the upcoming week Jonathan!

I also have a video game that costs me a lot of time and a lot of pain (it’s called FIFA, I do not recommend it haha) so know exactly how you feel there!

Fourth week comes to an end,

Forgive me, reader, for I have sinned.

I played about 20hours of some stupid video game this week, cost me lots of time, and is not the best way to relax when you already work on computer, won’t give you the name, I don’t want to trigger anyone reading this into playing it! 😀

Following this, I’ll start journaling daily, I was thinking about it after reading Atomic Habits last month (highly recommend), watching a Tim Ferris video about it (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UFdR8w_R1HA), and now it’s mentionned in the 10 week transformation too, must be a sign.

Studywise, I’m getting confident on the preflop macro decisions, how to adapt to opponents, why should I do this or that, still many mistakes but I like to get good foundations for the overall game before digging on the details, tough decisions are close to 0 EV, so mistakes are small, I do 3B more and better.

Even if the results didn’t follow (graph below), I’ve been autoplaying a bit too much I would say, will force myself to play 4 tables instead of 6, I’m still learning many things and my uncouscious competence is low. :p

    Week 5 plan:

    • Getting an Agenda and journaling.
    • Start session with clear goals.
    • Will continue preflop work mostly on my own, even if week 5 is the start of postflop.
    • More volume, better quality.

    Thanks for reading.

This one is a late one,

My week didn’t go so well, losing all the time even if playing really easy tables, so I took a 2 days break from the grind (I did study tho’).

Also I decided to only grind today, and take notes on what spots I’m not so comfortable with while playing, what I remember and what I think I forgot, that will give me a bit of homework to do.

Apart the grind, everything went good, I plan my days the night before, meditate, sport, study is on track, so I’m overall happy with the structure I built. Also doing this weekly review helps me have a clear view of the previous week, that’s a good thing.

    So for this week:

    • Volume (>10k hands).
    • Taking notes on the spots I hesitate, and check the notes/course (+ Quizz).
    • Do the Week 6.
    • I will try moving my sleep schedule to wake up about an hour or two earlier.

Thanks for reading and good luck at the tables.

    Hello,

I didn’t update on my progress for some time, mostly because I didn’t feel like it, poker results have not been amazing, and I decided to take a break on the 10Week program.

I’ve been running bad on the higher stakes, constantly adding new information to improve my game got me confused/overwhelmed.

During a downswing, we tend to doubt on our skill and knowledge, so instead of adding new things, I opted to work on what I already know, review my preflop and single raised pots mostly, and let it sink.

If you’re reading Mental Game of Poker, you know about the conscious and unconscious competence, I made the choice to get my actual conscious competences to get closer to unconscious competence, what a luxury to have access to enough information to be able to make this choice. ^^

I’ll maybe start watching some videos again this week, and will slow the pace, to make it a Few Months PLO Transformation.

I’ll post my montly graph so far as I didn’t update much.

Thanks reading me, have a good day.

This is something that ends up being very common the feeling overwhelmed with all the new information, is it likely that you were trying to apply everything you were learning all at once which caused this overwhelmingness and confusion?

I think you’ve already answered the question though, exactly what you said just slow down the pace although it is called the 10 week transformation it doesn’t mean you need to speed through it, if it takes you for example 10 months then so be it. The main thing is that you come away fully understanding the information within and avoid the current feeling of being overwhelmed and confused due to a high in take of information.

Best of luck this week if you play and good luck with the study grind!

    Hey guys,

This week is more or less in the continuation of the previous weeks, I’m happy with my game, getting comfortable and don’t need as much thinking in most spots.

Next week I’ll get back on track with the course.

Ev of 6.48bb/100, and I have about 4bb/100 rakeback, the tables are very soft.

    Hey everyone,

I’m not really active on the forums here, but I didn’t quit or anything.
I’m making good progress, slowing on the 10week course progression and focusing on getting everything well into my head as I learn was a good idea.

I’m making good progress, even started to shot/bumhunt some 400PLO tables since a few days.

Thanks to the team for good content and tools. :p

Last 50k hands (I played this over ~the last 2 months, I took some holidays):
