Johnny’s journey to mid-stakes

Hello everyone! I’m 24 year old from Serbia and poker is my side income since I was 18. I mostly played NLH online, and after a while it became really boring. It was hard for me to play even a 1hr session, let alone study – watch a video or play with a solver for 1hr. Then I started experimenting with PLO and here I am. I fell in love with the game all over again, and the motivation to study and improve and learn more about the game is back! ATM I’m playing some really soft low stakes games on pokerbros, and the goal is to beat mid stakes online. I’ve never been much of a writer, but I will do my best to post hands and updates as I go.

    Hey @nikolafilipovic

Welcome to the PLO Mastermind and the community!

Glad to hear that you found the love for the game all over again and PLO was the catalyst for that.

Best of luck with everything and look forward to reading about your progress!

    First update:
I’ve been practicing preflop alot with combination of watching 10-Week PLO Transformation, and I’m feeling getting comfortable in the games I’m playing. I even experimented with the heads up play, and I’m really liking it. The bankroll stands at around 5k. Here are the results so far. Not much of a sample, but it will increase over time. For now I feel like I should mostly focus on studying. I will post some interesting hands in the hand history section of the forum.

    Second update:

It’s been a couple of days since my last update. I’ve got to week 4 in the 10-Week PLO Transformation, and decided to just practice with PLO Trainer for couple of days in orded to get better feel for my RFI ranges as well as cold calling ranges (which I play mostly by feel).

When I practice with the PLO Trainer, I get around 85-90% hands correct, and since I’ve got small sample of the hands I’ve played, I’m tracking my mistakes in the trainer. So far I’m playing bit too loose from every position except EP. At which point you would say you got to know the ranges? When you get almost always 48-49 out of 50 hands correct?

As for the grinding update, I’ve played around 3k hands since my last update. And had some ups and some downs, but mostly ups since I’m playing some really soft tables full of live players over at PokerBros.

Here is one interesting hand (Screenshot down below) from HU battle vs fish. Im not an expert by any means, but 95/89, with 14 cold call and 82% 3bet over 1k sample seems like a catch.

    – He had 90% fold to cbet in SRP -> he played crazy preflop and mostly fit or fold postflop

    FLOP (Pot was 18$):

I think this is the board that connect with both of us. If it was rainbow, I would definitely prefer smaller sizing. Since we are so deep, and board is pretty wet, I think pot size cbet would be better with most hands. This hand I don’t think it is clear value bet (I might be too nitty), since all of the hands he continues with are better flush draws, Ax or better, but we still want to bet for protection and put KKxx-QQxx under pressure, that is why I chose 2/3 over PSB.

    TURN (Pot was 42$) :

We hit our 2 pair. Straight gets there. I chose to bet 1/2, but I think this is a mistake. We don’t need that much protection and we are definitely not betting for value. We want to push Ax off equity, and vs naked Ax we do just fine even if we check. He raises and we hate our life. He has been playing straight forward postflop so far, so I dont think he has anything but a straight. He doesnt raise sets, and we block everything for his combo draws that he might raise. So i think he almost always has 97 or 74 here. We need 33% equity and vs naked 97, we are close to that, but vs 97 + better flush draw, for example JT97 (but I guess this wouldnt be that much combos) with J high flush draw, we have 15% equity. In the end I decided to call.

    RIVER (Pot was 252$):

I think his hand is basically face up and river brings a good card for us. We have lots of A8, A6, A5, 88, 66 that boat up and play this way so far. That is why I chose to lead and go for it. Wasn’t sure if we should go for pot size bet or smaller. In the moment I felt my hand would look stronger if I bet bit smaller than pot size bet. We even have 5 and 8 in our hand which I think should count as good blockers.

What do you think of flop-turn-river plays? As played, would you bluff the river?

P.S: I tried using the hand converter, but for some reason it wouldnt work and I was too lazy to contact the support. When I copy the hand from HM3, it gets the check mark, but it says format not supported, or something like that. I used the weak tight converter, but for some reason there were 2 heros in the hand and pot sizes werent correct.

I didn’t want this post to be so long, but If you got this far I appreciate it!

Subbed. I was like you playing NL for side income it got incredibly boring. PLO is exciting I feel like I did the first time I played poker.

5k bankroll and playing PLO100 and PLO200, you are braver than I haha. You are off to a great start results wise. Looking forward to more posts.

    Good luck.
