I have been an actuary for the past 14 years but got burned out on my profession. I decided to go to graduate school to pivot my career. I have more free time now than I did as a working executive and want to spend much of the next few years to improving my poker game. I would also like to defray some of my lost income from leaving the workforce through poker winnings.

    Vision Statement:

I am a highly successful part-time poker player who accumulates wealth by playing PLO and NLH tournaments live and online. I love competition and continuously strive to improve.

    Purpose:

I work on poker daily because it helps me to improve my self-discipline and emotional control. I enjoy socializing with and competing against a diverse group of people. The income I make from poker allows me to supplement my living expenses and fund my savings.

    Milestones:

    • All-in adjusted win-rate (after rakeback) of 5 bb/100 at PLO $100 over 100,000 hands

    • Average 14 hours per week of poker study

    • Prepare written session play before every session and stick to it with regards to stakes, maximum time, and maximum number of simultaneous tables

As part of my optimization plan (10 Week Transformation, Lesson 1.5), I’m going to change my diet. I’ve noticed that at different times of day my energy level, alertness, and motivation all fluctuate. Usually I feel wide awake in the morning, good through lunch, then downright lethargic a few hours after lunch, then I rebound late afternoon and tire again at night. If I stay up late in a live poker session, I have similar cycles late at night. This happens most days, regardless of what I’m doing.

After researching and discussing with a doctor, I suspect these swings have to do with blood sugar spikes throughout the day. I’ve been on a crappy, mostly fast food diet lately. I’m going to switch to a low carb high fat (LCHF) diet of unprocessed foods for the next 1-2 weeks and track my progress. If it works, I’ll implement long-term, and optimize further.

I bought a glucose meter and will track my blood sugar over the next few weeks as I try this diet. I will also take notes throughout the day of how I feel.

I took two baseline measurements today at 10:00 am and at 10:30 pm and both numbers were in the upper end of the normal range, but 11 mg/dL apart. So I’m not diabetic, nor even pre-diabetic, but I strongly believe the blood sugar swings are inhibiting me from achieving my full potential.

How long would it take to get in 100K hands? I think you could break through in a matter of a few months possibly within 90 days make some real progress possibly. Where are you from? U.S.?

The fast food thing I was doing that for a long time. It’s not sustainable right?

These days I can get healthy food delivered or I asked my GF to cook some recipes for me. I also had a personal chef for awhile; Lately, I would designate a day every week to do food prep with my GF. So I had some leverage there plus it was a win for both of us.

After the WSOP (I’m in Vegas the next 7 weeks) I’ll hire a PA for the food preps and other errands / help.

I’m not sure how long it will take to get in 100K hands, because it will really depend on how much live poker I play. Part of me would like to play only online 6-max PLO for the next few months, but the live poker where I live (Texas) is so profitable (I’m averaging north of $160/hr over 500 hours) so there’s a dilemma of how much short term income to sacrifice. But I don’t think I’m getting better by playing just live and I’d really like to move up to even higher stakes and play deeper stacks. I typically buy in live for 100-150 bb but there is no max buy-in at higher stakes so it’s not uncommon to see several people with more than 1,000 bb on the table. Ultimately I’d like to play a lot of tournaments, but I’ll still keep playing cash games since my schedule isn’t flexible enough to play only tournaments.

In terms of the diet, I’m tracking the metrics and am really hopeful I can get my energy level stabilized. I have given up a lot of EV when I was in a mental fog. I should have a better sense of how it’s working in a couple weeks.

Well I spent a couple days and built out a sim database for PLO 50 that enables me to really delve into the data myself in ways the trainer tool can’t. Here’s a screenshot with an example: https://ibb.co/3svRvzD 😀
