Hi everyone. My name is Dennis and I am launching my poker carrier again. I started to play poker online more than 10 years ago, mainly NL. At the peak of carrier, I played nl200 and could not go further. That time I considered poker as a hobby and unsurprisingly little by little I began my journey down to limits. Now I may definitely tell that it happened because of lack of study and avoid of mental game component in my game plan.

At the end of last year friend of mine showed me PLO and I have flashed with this game a lot. Little by little almost without any strategic preparation I was able show positive results in plo5-25. Starting plo50, I joined to 10-week transformation to dive deeply into the theory. Unfortunately after 100k hands (2 month) of plo 50 I showed -1.4 EV/bb. I already faced same scenario when I played holdem. After changing game towards GTO model my results started to get even worse.

Starting this blog, I wish to improve of my understanding main principles of GTO play and how to imply it to different game situation. I believe with community assistance I will be able to beat this game J

I have not made detailed “anti-crisis” plan yet, draft only. Main takeaways are:

    – 4 hours theory/mental game preparation per working day

    - 2-3 hours play per day

    - 50k hand on plo5

    - daily report in my blog with result graphs.

Concerning mental game part. It would be great if you may share some insights of how to improve focus and avoid of automatic play. I already started morning meditations but I am not sure it will be enough.

I wonder what size to choose in such spots. There is not mush 2P + in opponent range. FD in on board so I do not want to XB w my hand. CB is quite a good solution. I chose pot size to max my FOLD EQ. Am I alright?

Opponent rec player 56/8 (25 hands).

Should we lead as we are blocking opponent CB range (Q)? As opp have low PFR I put him on high pairs/ heavy rundowns that probably CB a lot. Board is drw heavy, we have poor play-ability, we are blocking top set it seems for me we should raise. From other side we have flip with opponent stack off range (FD+SD). Guys, what you advise?

Opps is 56/11 (not much hands) Now I think we should XB and give up vs POTB. During play I made CB with 3/4 size as we are deep.

13.06. I have played little more then I planned to. Regarding theory – spent few hours checking hh of good players. Main takeway – they usually do not do any unnecessary mistakes ( light 3bets, light XR ). Still need something to train my focus. Very often find myself dreaming while I have to think about game Grinning By the way, 200bb stack lost is quads into straight flush of VIP opponent who is playing -100 bb.

    Hello Dennis,

I got two thoughts reading your blog

On your 1st pots, you speak about your plan of the day and you mention 4 hours theory/mental game. I think it’s not achievable in a long run, and the problem with a high daily routine is when you fail, the dayly thing is ruined.

Im a screenwriter and my daily routine is 20 minutes of writing everyday. There is no way I can’t achieve that and nothing forbids me to do more. But the thing is I never fail.

On your second post, You spoke about fold equity in a game which is PLO5. I play mainly at PLO25 and I really began to see fold equity when I do shots at PLO50. Also I played a lot in PLO10. And I think if you can afford to skip some stakes and jump in PLO50 or 25, you will see better players of course, but at least, the smart plays you learn from here will make senses for them….. In PLO5 or 10, the only thing I can understand from some players is they try to outplay you 🙂

Good luck anyway and looking forward to read your progress (and reach mine 🙂 )

    Hey Dennis,

Welcome to the community thanks for creating a blog!

@funkarello makes a really good point that long term i’m not sure how sustainable the 4hr theory/mental game study will be, although I am sure it’s a case of once you improve your mental game to a state that you are happy with that number will be reduced to study time only?

Regarding mental game, I would definitely check out The Mental Game of Poker by Jared Tendler if you have not already, that helped me a lot when it was first released and is also a book Fernando highly recommends.

Furthermore, if your actions are related to tilt e.g playing higher than your roll suggests I’d definitely look into whether the site you play on have any restriction options such as limiting your stakes to PLO 5 or 10 until you are comfortably beating them/happy with your progress then requesting for them to be moved for the next stake. This was something that helped me massively when it was originally introduced on Stars as I had this tendency as soon as I implemented it it gave me the chance to cool down when things were going bad knowing I couldn’t do anything silly.

Best of luck with your goals, and look forward to following along! Good luck.
