    Hi Everyone,

Intro – I’ve just joined PLO Mastermind. I played NLHE cash until about 2014. I worked my way up from micro stakes and in the end played as high as $5-$10 (profitably! But more comfortably at $2/$4 and $3/$6). I loved the mental challenge and the theory. I gave it up though as it wasn’t really sustainable to be doing all that work away from the table and playing, as well as my full time job as an emergency medicine consultant. I took some time to make that decision but in the end decided to stick with medicine (which I’m very happy with, particularly as online poker is banned in Australia now). So for the past few years I’ve just been playing for fun and in that time got introduced to PLO. I know that I have a very shaky grasp of the game but I still love poker and particularly PLO.

I’ve just moved to Alice Springs (a small town in the middle of Australia) for a year for work and there is a great home game here that runs 3-4 times a week, $300 buy in, no rake and its all PLO. I have a lot more time on my hands in this job and so have decided to get back into the theory and improve my game.

I also trade Forex and there are a lot of similarities between poker and trading and I think that my work on PLO will help my trading and vice versa.

So I’m really excited to be starting this journey and really looking forward to getting back into studying poker and playing a lot more.

Vision – I am a profitable live PLO player. Initially in the home game that runs here. Then back in Sydney in the casino there. I have a deep understanding of the theory and a really solid game. By the time I get back to Sydney in a year I’ll be comfortable playing the $5-$5 game or higher.

Purpose – I’m doing it for fun and enjoyment but have a real drive to want to get better. This is going to be discretionary income for me. I am not looking to go pro full-time but I am looking to develop my knowledge and understanding to as close to a pro level as I can and know that if I wanted to cut my hours down in medicine then this would be a viable supplemental income.

Milestones – Complete the 10 week course. Consistently profitable on a weekly/monthly basis in the home game this year. Build my bankroll to >20k over the year.

    Bring it on!!!!!

    Hey Jules,

Welcome to the community and to the PLO Mastermind it’s great to have you on board.

Great to hear that you’re getting back into poker as a hobby and for your love of the game. I think one important thing with trading and poker is the ability to help assist with the variance I have a lot of friends that do both and they’ve said the similarities are uncanny but the swings they’ve faced in trading and vice versa has helped them tremendously in being able to handle it better along with the tilt haha

How have you been finding the 10-Week Transformation thus far?

Let’s get you crushing those home games and on the path to beating the live games back in Sydney!

How often do you play the home game?

If you ever have any questions please do not hesitate to reach out and we’ll be happy to assist.

Best of luck and let’s crush!

    Ash

      Hi Ash,

I play the home game 2-3 times a week.

So far I really like the structure of the course and the way it’s started out. I’ve done a fait bit of educational work with junior doctors and a lot of work on myself (emotions, tilt, beliefs etc) with my trading and obviously got practised at doing a lot of deep work away from the table when I was playing Hold’em.

So a lot of the first 2 weeks was familiar stuff but I like the way it was presented. I still learnt new aspects of things or re-remembered stuff so it definitely was useful. but it also meant that I was able to go through the videos fairly quickly.

I basically did week 1 in one day and week 2 in another. Now that I’m at the heavier theory I’m slowing right down and only plan to do 1-2 videos a day.

But with all my study over the years for medicine I know I can assimilate a lot of info and work hard for decent periods of time (I love learning!). So I’m really looking forward to this and hopefully will crush bth this course and the home game.

My only concern is that as I can’t play online I lack the ability to play larger volumes of hands and I can’t submit hand histories and results as easily. So I’m thinking that may impede my progress a bit as it won’t be as easy to get feedback.

However, I’ll start keeping a record of my wins and losses and will do a session debrief each time and try and mark down interesting hands but it’ll be a little difficult writing down too much in the home game.

      Cheers

      Jules
