    Hey Kevin,

Just found this on the forums, great to see you are streaming!

Are you a US player? I’d love to connect with you, I’m a fulltime grinder in the US, playing similar stakes as you. Would love to pick your mind sometime.

SenselessApprentice#9877 is my discord, either way good luck with the 90 day challenge.

Nice start so far, is that like 30k hands? Having trouble reading it on my phone.

Your first post was on December 1st. Today is January 15th. So that’s less then two months that you’ve been doing this course? If you’ll allow, let me share my experience so far, maybe it will help you, maybe it will tilt you, but here goes.

I started playing full time poker about a year ago, and lost nearly $15k in the first few months, playing way too many tables, always playing for stacks, with no fundamentals. This was soul crushing, as I had sold my stake in a financial services company that I was a partner in for 10 years to finally follow my dream of being a poker pro. Self doubt, regret, all these negative emotions were swirling around in my head after punting this money in a very short time period. I’m married, with a wife that has gotten used to a nice lifestyle, so failure isn’t an option.

It was at that point I decided I cannot just play like I had done in the past, and signed up for the mastermind around August of last year. I’ve put in 20+ hours a week of study for the past 4 months, and slowly the results started to come. Month one I was break even. Month two +2k. Month three +5.5k. In December I had around a +7k month and got closer to my monthly goal, regained my confidence, and plugged some very basic leaks (mine was being too maniacal and VPIP way too high). I played a ton of pLO pre Black Friday so I’m probably progressing quicker then your average newbie. I think Fernando said it typically take 6-12 months for most new players to start seeing consistent results, I could be off on that time frame, but it’s not overnight.

It’s not easy, the ups and downs are tough if you don’t handle them properly. It seems like you are focusing a lot of your attention on your results and this “downswing”. An important skill I’ve developed in this whole process is to not pay attention to my results/balance while in the middle of a session (remember what Kenny Rogers said, “You never count your money when your sittin at the table”). Personally, being free from the worry of whether I’m up or down, allows for much better decision making. Easy to say, hard to do, but well worth it once you figure it out.

Also, and this is super important, don’t forget to have fun. Find the little victories, go out for ice cream after a long session where you maintained and didn’t tilt after a string of bad beats. If you can’t find the joy in playing, maybe it isn’t you thing, and that’s totally cool as well.

I guess the whole point of this rant (I’m sorry if it came of as self indulgent, I’m really trying to help), is that it’s only been a short time. Work the process, do some soul searching, and really, don’t take it TOO seriously. It is a game, after all.

    Best,

    Devin

Good luck with your journey! I’ll try and follow your log, I read most of the new ones and yours is excellent and well thought out.

I hope we can discuss more hands in the hand check up discord as well.

    Happy 2021!

    Thanks Ash.

I’d had the business for 10 years and had been wanting to do something different for awhile, COVID was the catalyst.

Asia is our most likely destination, as we are already established there. We spent time in Switzerland in 2018 and Austria/Germany 2019 and loved it, but the reality of getting any type of visas now and even before is challenging so that will have to be on hold for a bit. The dream is to have a little chateau somewhere in the alps, ski in the winter, mountain bike in the summer, and have kids that can speak like 5 languages 🙂

      Update!

Happy 2021 all, wanted to give a quick update as to how this year has gone so far.

I’ve been in profit every month since I started the mastermind, each month showing steady increases. Had a pretty good December I was up around 35bi at PLO 200.

It’s been nice talking to some of you in the hand checkup discord, and I’m hoping to continue doing so throughout this year.

My goals in 2021 are to put in more volume at PLO500 on certain sites. Another big goal is to dive even deeper into solver world/PLO trainer. I’ve noticed that on my main site that doesn’t allow any type of HUDs, that I’ve been using a lot more exploitative play, which typically has worked out well at PLO200 but has also ended in pure disaster, particularly when shot taking against the regs at 2/5 and 5/10.

On the site that doesn’t allow HUDs I record my sessions with Loom, and have been using the preflop helper discord a ton which has been a tremendous help.

Finally, I’m making an effort to play on other sites in which I’m less comfortable with that allow HUDs, as I prepare for a potential move abroad, which will allow me access to GG/PS/PP etc. I’m anticipating a much tougher player pool at the 200/500 games, so I’m keenly aware that I must put in more time to study. This December I played about 50k hands with a HUD, and was able to analyze my hands in a much more efficient way than fast forwarding through hours of Loom footage.

SenselessApprentice#9877 on discord, HMU if you wanna chat about hands! GL to you all in 2021.

Happy wife, happy life! Been married 5 yrs. myself, so know how important it is to make time for each other.

You mentioned you played on ignition a bit, how do you rate the competition there relative to GG? I’m in the US and am planning on moving abroad, and have plans to play on GG. I’m just worried that the competition will be much tougher at 100/200/500 plo, so have been trying to train hard. US accessible sites have some good players, but also many recreationals that I’ve grown accustomed to playing against, blessing and a curse I suppose.

Hope to continue hearing your weekly updates, gl this week.
