The Generic ‘This is my year’ Thread 2021

Posted by Tractatus1 on January 2, 2021 at 4:27 pm

    Hi all,

A bit of background about me, I am from the UK and am 24 years old. I first started playing poker in 2014 and grinded a decent return during my university studies. I decided to quit in 2017 after going on a soul crushing downswing that put me off the game for a while.

Fast foward to summer of 2020 and a few years of career grinding. With lockdowns affecting most european countries, I redeposited and started to play PLO again. Initially only for fun. I fell in love with the game once again.

I have played fairly consistently since july now and achieved the following graph for 2020: (see pic).

I didn’t run the best all-in wise but the yellow line gives me confidence that I at least have something to build upon. I played at stakes of 2PLO & 5PLO intially with the bulk of my volume at 10PLO.

My goals for 2021 are as follows (split into process orientated goals and results orientated):

    Process

    – Play 1k hands per day from Monday to Saturday.

    – Review a minmum of 5 hands per day from Monday to Saturday.

    – Review and take notes on one PLO Mastermind video per day from Monday to Saturday.

    – Take every sunday off from playing and studying. (Condition: Should I not be able to play on another day of the week for example if I socialise on a saturday then sunday will be used to replace this day).

    – Play 0 hands at Zoom/Fast Fold formats.

    – Play 0 hands at Pokerstars.

    Results

    – Have bankroll required to play 20PLO [24/02]

    – Have bankroll required to play 50PLO [15/04]

    – Have bankroll required to play 100PLO [04/07]

I will not have a set schedule for posting updates as some days/weeks might be interesting and others not but I will keep as frequent as I can.

    Update 1

Not a good start to the year. -8BI so far but managed to run above EV for once.

Process goals going ok not great but not awfully:

    Hands : 2417/3000

    Hands Reviewed: 10/15

    Videos Reviewed: 2/3

Overall semi happy with my actual play. I struggled with tilting a little when having some back to back hands where I get drawn out on which is the reason I have stopped playing the past two days rather than spew off 5 BI for no reason.

A couple of hands I have been unsure on

Unsure if this is a call both preflop and on flop:

    Hey @tractatus1

Welcome to the PLO Mastermind and the community!

It’s great that you were able to find your love for the game again during a period of time where it was doom and gloom for the whole world (even still now to a degree) this is something i’ve noticed a lot which is great to see those that fell out of love with poker, find that passion for the game once again.

Looks like the EV gods owe you many big blinds right now but as you said it can be flipped into a positive and give you the confidence to build upon and work on certain areas.

If you ever have any concerns with preflop i’d definitely recommend joining our Discord server where we have the preflop helper you can join here: https://discord.gg/Jc8n8GwK7G once joined if you direct message myself on there ADelaney#7944 i’ll be able to get you all set up. This is also a good place to share hand histories (as well as the hand history section within the forum) with other members and get their opinions. I’ll provide my thoughts below on a couple of the hands.

Regarding hand 1 preflop is close but a call is fine (-0.89EV play but straight up folding pre would lose you -1EV) , flop fold is fine you have no nut draws and facing a bet and a raise no need to go with this hand.

hand 2 as you already analysed yourself, is a pure fold preflop it only becomes a call vs BTN or SB open vs all other positions it’s a fold.

Best of luck for this year and Happy New Year. I look forward to following along with your progress.

    Update since 05/01

    Results in graph

Running above EV still which is a nice change, went on a mini heater at the start of the week but variance hit me 🙁 A winning week so should not be complaining.

    Process:

    Hands: 4322/5000

    Hands Reviewed: 21/25

    Videos Studied: 12/5

Going well against these this week, I am fine on the volume and Hands reviewed front. I have been trying to get in quality hands and quitting sessions when I feel unfocused/tired/bored etc.

I have broken one of my fules aleady; No fast fold formats. I had not realised that the PartyPoker FF rakes around 18bb/100 which is a lot less than stars does (22bb/100). I will probably flit between PP FastFold and Ipoker reg tables for now, the reg tables on IPoker are so soft but the number of hands you can get in for FF is insane. Winrates are probably about the same since Ipoker rake is 24bb/100 but games being softer counters that. I’ll keep playing for a bit and then see how I’m doing. One downside is no HUD :/

I’ve started the 10-week transformation course, I’m impressed so far and is giving great content not only on how to play poker but how to be a poker player. I’m going to implement the ‘Deep Work’ sessions suggested twice a week in place of hands review. It’s funny because i’ve just finished a book on Deep Work.

I’ve been given access to the Preflop heloper and downloaded the PLO trainer. Both have been a massive help so far, I think that utilising then in a Deep Work setting will increase my efficiency of learning from these even more.

I’ve got a crazy week next week, I have two exams for my Masters so my expectation is that I will not put in much volume. This is fine though as after next week I do not have any exams until the summer so cramming revision will not be part of the schedule for a while. Additionally, I have found that when I am stressed from Uni or Work then my play is affected. Quality over quantity.

That being said, I will still have time for poker this week so I think it will be more effective to study than play given the week ahead.

    Goals for next week:

    – Play 250 hands per day (Mon-Thur)

    – Play 1.5k hands per day (Sat + Sun)

    – Have 3 Deep Work sessions

    – Review 15 Hands

    – Finish week 3 of 10-week transformation

    – Use friday as day off from poker for recuperation

I hope results are better next week for the graph lovers

Glad to see you’re still putting in solid sessions and getting the results, good stuff!

Best of luck with your masters exams I hope they go well for you!

Quality over quantity indeed, when you have things going on outside of poker that provide a lot of stress you think ahh poker will take my mind off it lets play a session but ultimately all that stuff carries over to the point you can never really be in a position to play your A game or even B game in these situations as you have so much going on in your head that maybe sometimes you don’t even realise that is having a serious impact on your overall decision making. It’s definitely best when in these scenarios to just avoid playing at all (from personal experience avoid the tables when stressed out haha)

Best of luck for the next week with the poker and studying hope it goes well for you!

Hi @Adelaney, thanks for checking in!

I agree, I’ve got to that point in the week where I have missed playing so has become more of a stress relief like you say

    Update since 11/01

Super disappointed with how things have gone this week, just kept on going down and down.

Really bummed me out, seems like I’m spinning my wheels at the moment and not going anywhere. I think preflop I am fine with now, worked through weeks 3&4 of 10 week transformation and tbh even when I compare my hands recently vs PLO trainer and PreFlop helper there are minimal mistakes.

The down trend has been going on for a week or so now and has left me less motivated to play. I think part of recent results has probably been a mixture of bad play and run bad. My WWSF is really low at 39% but Average All in Equity at 57%. But small sample.

I think I need to focus on postflop for the next week. I know there are clear leaks in my game. One I am sure of is not being able to fold on the river with a made hand when someone donks into me and the river is a nut changing card. Super tilting for me and I always seem to pay off.

One thing that I’ve been amazing by is a player on iPoker who has stats VPIP/PFR as 40/9 and I’ve seen on a PTR site he is the biggest winner at these games for the past year. I will post below the results I have for him (one with SD/nonSD), the guy crushes it but doesnt seem to play as taught on PLO mastermind. I thought he was killing it in red line but apparently its showdown. I don’t know how he does it. His probe/float betting stats are fairly normal ~35% so I cannot work out where his edge is. Props to him.

For sure redline needs to be sorted for me, just goes straight down at the moment. Whole game needs work tbh, who am I kidding here.

    Goals for next week:

    – Open GGpoker account (rake and rakeback look really good)

    – If can get GG going, play 1k hands per day (Mon-Fri). 750 per day if not

    – Finish week 5 of 10 week transformation

    – Study Sessions:

    1) BB Defense vs BTN/CO

    2) BB Defense vs EP/MP

    3) IP Flop CB

    4) OOP Flop CB

    – Have a more positive week and enjoy poker more

      Hey @tractatus1

If you’re having difficulty set up with GGPoker i’d recommend speaking with @tomsmeets he might be able to assist you here as I know there have been some changes regarding the UK recently (unrelated to brexit) and there may be a work around with this.

Re: feeling bummed out and less motivated it’s never bad when you’re feeling like this to just step away take a day or so to regroup do a bit of studying and reduce the playing amount, running bad is never great but it can be made far worse when you’re going into sessions losing a buy in or two and becoming completely unfocused and losing more.

Keep at it, keep studying and plugging away things will turn naturally, you seem to know the path your’e on and where you want to focus which is already a huge step as you’re able to dive straight in to all these areas.

      Good luck this week.

          Hi Tom!

Thanks for the reply, I have already managed to set up my GG account but I will look today for blackcard and get this set up

The skin was iPoker, rakeback was ok but actual rake was pretty high, games are v soft so I didnt mind grinding through it. Not sure if theres any additional rakeback oppurunities for this?

          Thanks

        Hi Ash,

Thanks for the motivating words, this week has not been much better so far. I’m not used to such a heavy downswing but as you say, I think the best course of action is to keep studying. I like what you are saying about studying more and is something I will look to do rest of the week.

        Thanks

Update Since 23/01 and January Review

Abysmal end to the month after a terrible month. Graph for full month is with SD/nonSD and other graph is since last update. This is the worst month I’ve ever had playing poker.

I joind GG and played rush for the past week or so.

Not good at all, super dissaponted in how things have gone. I feel as though I have put in a lot of hours towards my game this month with nothing to show for it. The only positive I can see from it is that I was losing less in my last two sessions.

Biggest pot I played which also was the biggest pot I lost:

Someone genuinely called a 4bet out of position with 7654ss and managed to stack two guys. My head sank in my hands.

My Cbetting game has improved the past few days after working through the 10-week transformation. I haven’t managed to get through all of week 5 yet but that is something I will work through tomorrow.

My confidence really got knocked this past week while playing. I just could never seem to win a showdown or get a bluff through. I know Rush/Zoom/Fast Fold is a tougher format but it has just seemed this week as though my opponents always have my hand +1 in strength.

With my bankroll as it is at the moment, if this is not just a downswing and truly reflects my skill at this game type then I will be busto by the end of next month but that will be something to worry about next month.

I think with this reality dawning on me, I will have to cut my hands per day in order to be able to complete the full 10-week transformation course before I go busto. This is a reality I thought would not happen but here we are. A limit of 500 hands per day will have to be imposed.

If I were able to beat Rush as a format it would be ideal as I find it the most enjoyable to play. Normal tables are softer but much slower. Does anybody in the PLO Mastermind forums have mid to long term results of beating Rush at 25PLO or below? If so, please message me as I would like to become like you 🙂

Fingers crossed february will be a better month. Even just breaking even would be a big win at this rate. If I am honest, I think this is a big downswing and doesnt reflect fully on my play. My stats for Rush have been 26/19/7 for VPIP/PFR/3B which I think is in the range expected for (even if not completely crushing) a competent player and certainly not losing at 39bb/100!

    My goals for February:

    – Play 40k hands (if not losing at 39bb/100). Play 15k hands if results continue

    – Complete up to week 9 of 10-week transformation

    – Improve Turn decisions with 3 study sessions

    – Improve River decisions with 3 study sessions

    – Become more involved with the PLO Mastermind community both on this forum and Discord

    Goals for the next week:

    – Play 3k hands

    – Complete week 5 & 6 of 10W Transformation

    – Complete 6 Study sessions of a minimum of 1 hour each

    – Be more process orientated when assessing sessions

My birthday is at the end next month so fingers crossed I have a winning month and we are out of lockdown by then. I need a win after January 2021.

All the best to everyone else on their journey.

    Update Since 31/01

I’ve cut down the volume this week after the disaster towards the end of last month. Results have been so-so starting the week off well with the past few days going down. I’m quite surprised that I have been losing All-In EV because I don’t actually feel like I’ve been playing bad or getting crushed so to see the graph go downwards the past few days has been surprising for sure. That being said, I have played better than January though.

Last year when the first lockdown was going on and I was going through tough times, I found a quote that spurred me on:

    Hard times create strong men

    Strong men create good times

    Good times create weak men

    Weak men create hard times.

Last months results really made me consider internally how I am approaching the game in general. This is a good thing and has made me realise that I need to improve myself and approach to the game if I actually want to win. Tough results will create a strong player.

I really like playing and certainly is one of my more enjoyable times of the day (as long as I’m not getting completely crushed). Studying for me is a small mental hurdle to get started but I find I enjoy it once I’ve started, I particularly enjoy using the PLO trainer for studying.

That being said, while the initial enjoyment is there, I do not believe I am creating the correct environment/mental state in order for me to play. I listened to JNandez’s podcast about focussing while playing (he was talking about mainly at live tables) and it struck a chord with me, I have too many external distractions going on for me to consistently play anything like my B+ game. My brain keeps needing all these external distractions. So, these are the changes I am implementing:

    – Counter TV distractions while I am playing. Often this isn’t composed of me directly watching TV. Normally I play while my GF watches TV in the background, which my mind naturally wanders to. I have been putting headphones on and listening to music to drown this out

    – No music that has lyrics. Weird one, I find that I get more distracted when I’m listening to music with someone singing/rapping. I think this is because it’s more stimulating and enjoyable but not optimal for focussing. I’ve been reading studies about listening to music while playing sport (I know poker isn’t technically a spot but the theory of performance overlaps a lot), listening to any music boosts performance for all sports. Jazz has the biggest performance boost for decision-making sports along with classical. I have been flitting between these two this week alongside some alpha-wave stuff. My sample size isn’t large enough to form any opinions yet

    – Avoiding to eat sugar while playing. Again weird one but I find I have a big sugar rush where I play well then once it wears off my results tank. Might be too early to speculate but a theme of the past few weeks has been +ve first 100-200 hands then losing bigger afterwards. In the 10-week transformation, it is also explained by JNandez that digesting while playing is not optimal.

There’s one guy who has appeared in the pool on GGPoker this weekend with the alias ‘Hikkashi’. I don’t know who you are, if they’re in the PLO Mastermind but they tilt me so much. Minbetting every street and then getting to showdown with strong hands, calling no matter the equity they have and hitting on turn/river. Case in point that tilted me so much… how do you have this hand here?:

GG Poker – $0.10 PL Hi FAST (6 max) – Omaha Hi – 6 players
    Hand converted by PokerTracker 4

    BTN (BTN): 43.8 BB
    Hero (SB): 210.7 BB
    BB (BB): 217.9 BB
    UTG (UTG): 52.9 BB
    MP (MP): 100 BB
    CO (CO): 91 BB

Hero posts SB 0.5 BB, BB posts BB 1 BB

    Dealt to Hero:
    As Ac Ks 8d

fold, fold, fold, BTN raises to 2 BB, Hero raises to 7 BB, fold, BTN calls 5 BB

    Flop (15 BB, 2 players):
    8h 6s 4s
Hero checks, BTN bets 1 BB, Hero raises to 9.5 BB, BTN raises to 36.8 BB and is all-in, Hero calls 27.3 BB

    BTN shows:
    Qh Jc 7h 5h
    (Straight, Eight High)

    Hero shows:
    As Ac Ks 8d
    (Flush, Ace High)

My equity is fine here and if villain had KK57 or 8765 for example I’d just say GG but QJ75 ts and flopping the nuts?? These hands have been common when having AA so I feel as though this has been affecting my All-in EV. That’s how you make money when someone calls with these hands though.

I am more excited for the coming week than I was last week. I have been inspired by people on the discord who are able to beat 200z or 500z over a good sample size. If these stakes are beatable then so are mine. I just need to believe and improve.

    Goals for next week

    – Finish Week 6 10-Week transformation

    – Finish Week 7 10-Week transformation

    – Deep Dive into 20 hands in PLO Trainer

    – Play 6k hands

    Disaster. Absolute Disaster.

I cannot win, no matter how hard I try I cannot win. I’ve been putting 25+hours per week studying using the PLO mastermind and the more I study, the more I lose.

Poker is no longer fun. I log on, lose and then log-off. Everyday.

I feel like crying because I’m working so hard, the effort I am putting in on this and getting nowhere. To put this in perspective, since my last update I have played 10 days, only one have I had a positive day for All-In EV. I just do not understand how I can go from a small winner at a higher rake environment and move to a lower rake environment and just get crushed.

I just don’t understand it. There’s not even any variance of patches for me going up. It just all goes down.

I really want to succeed in this. I am going to try myself but putting so much effort into something and going down more and more (and at a faster rate) is not good for my mental health.

I know I’m not an amazing player. I should be beating 10PLO with the level of effort I am putting in. Correction, I dont even mind if I lose. To be losing at a 15bb/100 rate at 10PLO reg tables is humiliating.

Someone out there who is succeeding at these stakes (10-50PLO) please reach out and help me. I am a hard worker and am willing to listen to improve. I just can’t take another month of this.

I am going to continue working on the mastermind, I have started the Crushing Small Stakes Course today and will continue studying and working on my game.

I hope my next update is more cheerful

    Update 08/03/2021

It’s been minute since my last updated.

My downswing ended. Finally. I made some changes though.

I have watched most of the ShortStack Bootcamp. Hands down the biggest transformation to my game in my entire poker journey. So many plus points to shortstacking. Instantly my downswing stopped the day I swtiched to SS play.

My strat has been to start at 30bb and leave the table at 100BB. So far it has been working well. Built my roll up which coincided with a heater and started taking shots at 25PLO.

Then last tuesday was the first Mastermind Rake Race tourney on GG. I only went and won it! Ran super hot, got to play for a good hour with JNandez (even though he stacked me on my first entry) and overall had fun. I never play tournaments so was a shock to win. The SS training helped in the later stages when things got short.

So the next day after the tournament I went on a tear at 25PLO and then was rolled enough for 50PLO meaning I managed to hit my goal of 50PLO by end of Feb! Graph so far is below.

Low stakes is a lot different to micro. There still is fish but what consistutes as a ‘fish’ changes. People are more aggressive. I’ve been watching the Crushing PLO 100 course, one of the biggest takeaways I had from it was the importance of note taking and the level of note taking you need to get to in order to become a crushing player in the pool.

A testimant to that is the below hand. Villain had made a similar bluff about 10 mins earlier which I had noted down. Probably the sickest river call i’ve made so far!:

(Before people think this is a bad open, this is an open SS! A+K blockers matter more than playability and I’ve checked in the pre-flop helper bot this is and RFI from MP)

    :))))))

Not been running the best so far but roughly braking even factoring in Rakeback + All in situtations so far which is a hell of a lot better than the crashing of 2021. Super pleased about the past two weeks, I’ve studied 1 hour of preflop + 1 hour of postflop + 1 MM vid every day. If I keep with this mindset and work ethic for the rest of the year, I am confident I will be one of the strongest players in the 50PLO Zoom pool. If not then higher. My original aim was to get to 100PLO by the end of 2021 and I am confident if I keep on my path I will get there.

Really excited about the rest of the month, hopefully I don’t bump into a massive downswing.

For those who like listening to music while playing, I recommend Etherwood for some nice liquid drum and bass vibes 🙂

GL all and if anyone is playing the GG rake tournament then hit me up as I defend my crown.
